Toxic Chemicals in Your Period Underwear? What to Know About PFAS

Over the past few years, PFAS – the so-called “forever chemicals” – have been making headlines. They’ve been found in all kinds of everyday products, including period underwear. But what does that really mean for us? Could these harmful substances be lurking in something as personal as our underwear? And most importantly – how can we choose menstrual products that are actually safe for our bodies?

What are PFAS – and why should we avoid them?

PFAS (short for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are man-made chemicals that don’t break down in the environment and can build up in our bodies over time – sometimes for decades. They’re often used to make fabrics resistant to water, oil, and stains. Sounds convenient, right? But there’s a serious downside.

Health experts and organizations like the European Environment Agency warn that PFAS exposure may be linked to:

  • liver damage
  • thyroid disorders
  • hormone disruption
  • fertility issues
  • an increased risk of cancer

That’s a lot to take in. And it’s a strong reason to start questioning how safe the everyday products we use really are – especially the ones we wear close to our bodies.

Shocking findings from the Mamavation Study

A few years ago, an independent organization called Mamavation conducted a large-scale investigation, testing over 50 different menstrual products – including period underwear, pads, and tampons.

The results were unexpected – and quite concerning. PFAS were found in 65% of the period underwear tested. In some cases, the levels of these chemicals were shockingly high. That means many women could have been exposed to potentially harmful substances during their periods – without even knowing it.

The study sparked a wave of concern. Women began demanding more transparency, better regulations, and safer options for their bodies.

Genial Day menstrual underwear do not contain PFAS

Most PFAS compounds contain an extremely strong carbon-fluorine (C-F) bond – so testing for fluorine in products is a common way to detect possible PFAS presence. The good news? Genial Day period underwear was tested for fluorine – and none was detected. That means these products are free from PFAS.

I personally use Genial Day products, and so do my daughter, friends, coworkers, and thousands of women around the world. That’s why it matters so much to me that they’re not only effective and comfortable – but also safe and trustworthy.

Why It Matters

When choosing period underwear, comfort and absorbency matter – but so does what they’re made of. Our skin is our largest organ, and it can absorb substances from everything we put on it. That’s why it’s essential to choose products that are clean, safe, and non-toxic.

Genial Day’s Commitment:

  • No harmful chemicals
  • Hypoallergenic and dermatologically tested
  • Sustainable and safe solutions for every girl and woman

How Can You Protect Yourself?

  1. Choose products that are tested and proven to be safe. Items from questionable sources like Temu or AliExpress often don’t meet proper safety or quality standards – and honestly, is your health worth the risk?
  2. Look for brands that are transparent about their ingredients and testing.
  3. Share this information with other women – our health depends on informed, conscious choices.

Period underwear should provide comfort and confidence, not pose a risk to your well-being. At Genial Day, we believe every woman deserves to feel safe and empowered in her choices.

Choose wisely – because your body is worth it.
